I was first introduced to underground music over the phone. It was a hot summer night and I was sitting with a friend on this stark white couch I took from the living room and had just arranged into my bedroom. I recently had gotten CD players and considered myself a DJ. Soon some prankster calls and tells me I'm not a DJ if I don't use vinyl. How did he know I was a DJ?
Turned out it was a friend of a friend who had heard about me. He started rattling off names of groups and artists I had never heard of and knew for certain were not played on the radio. Before then I thought the radio played all the music there was.
I soon also found out vinyl records were still being made and did end up getting turntables and it is my preferred way to spin. From that day on the music I found on my own without the help of mainstream radio has been so much better than most songs played on-air and the journey hasn't ended. I'm still finding good music that nobody knows about and love bringing to people's attention.
